Top 12 for 2012

So the year is coming to an end and I will countdown my top 12 reached items for 2012.  Looking back I have tried and tested many products but there are just those products that have made my makeup collection much more special this year.

1. Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer
I discussed this product in a blog post a while back but I just have to mention it again because although pricey this product is amazing and just gives you that coverage when you don’t feel like having much makeup on.  If you want a more inexpensive one to try I would recommend: Garnier’s BB Cream

2. Naked Palette by Urban Decay
Although I have not written about this palette I would say it is by far the most amazing, natural palette that should be in any makeup lovers collection.  It offers an array of colors and Urban Decay eyeshadows never fail in the pigmentation department.  The eyeshadows are also easy to apply and smooth.  They do have the Naked Palette 2 however I have not purchased it yet.

3. Clinique Chubby Sticks
This product was a recommendation from a friend of mine because I just adored the lip color she was wearing.  Clinique chubby sticks are a moisturizing lip balm that comes in a twistable stick form.  They come in 16 shades and have great color pigmentation to them.  They look natural on the lips and moisturize them at the same time.  This product is definitely something to try especially when you feel in a not so lipstick kind of mood.

4.  Highlighters
Highlighters are such a great invention, they highlight areas of your face where the light would touch and just give you an overall luminous look.  I have not been specific to any brand names because I have tried many and liked the overall look that it gave me.  Some to mention are: Benefit “Watts Up”, NARS Orgasm Illuminator, Benefit High Beam, Smashbox Photo Op Under eye Brightener and MAC Cream Color Base in Shell.

5.  La Fresh Wipes
These wipes have been a lifesaver and I am so happy that I decided to by them when I did.  As mentioned in a previous post they come in a variety of uses and I would recommend them to anyone.  The ones to look out for are: Nail Polish remover wipes, Makeup/Eye/Lip Remover Wipes, Anti-Bacterial Wipes, Deodorant Wipes, who am I kidding try them all!

6. Aveeno Cleanser
Due to my overly sensitive skin Aveeno has been gentle and easy to use.  This cleanser is amazing and has a slight refreshing smell to it.  The cleanser lathers well and removes all dirt and residue that is on my face.  I would definitely repurchase this cleanser.  On a side note, I do often use the cleanser with my Clarisonic Mia.

7.  Maybelline Mascaras
I have tried many of Maybelline’s Masacaras and I believe that you don’t need to spend a lot of money on top brand mascaras because the drugstore brands have amazing quality.  I am not sure why but I always reach for Maybelline Mascaras and they never disappoint.  The Maybelline brand in general has amazing products to offer.  Some Maybelline Mascaras that I have tried are: Maybelline Mega Plush Mascara, Maybelline Falsies Masacara, Maybelline Great Lash Mascara, and Maybelline Colossal Mascara.

8.  Neutrogena Sunscreen
Sunscreen is an essential in my beauty routine and I have tried many sunscreens in the past however I really like the way this sunscreen doubles as a moisturizer as well.  Since moving to this humid place of Tanzania I find myself grabbing for sunscreen every time I leave the house.  Sunscreen has many benefits regardless of the weather and sun safety is not something to mess around with.  When the summer months do roll around try out Sephora’s Sun Safety Kit which lets you sample various sun care products of different brands.

9.  Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick
This is probably one of the best products I absolutely LOVE from the Bobbi Brown collection.  This shimmer brick can be used to illuminate different parts of the face, it can be used as a bronzer/blush, and it can be used as eyeshadow as well.  The Shimmer Brick comes in a gradient of color families (browns, pinks, oranges) and the product lasts wherever it is applied.  This product is on the pricier side however because of its multi-uses it is worth trying out.

10.  Rimmel Blushes
Surprised? Regardless of brand I really was impressed when I bought my first ever Rimmel Blush.  To be honest I only bought it because it was on sale for $2 and thought it was such a steal, but regardless the retail value is around $4.99 so it is inexpensive especially compared to the high end brands.  Cheap but quality which is what I am always searching for.  The blush overall comes in a variety of shades, pigmentation is good and it applies really well on the cheeks.

11.  Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion
Many people believe that eyeshadow primer or majority of the primers they invent these days is unnecessary however eyeshadow primer potion helps to refine and polish your eyeshadow look.  If you want no creases and your eyeshadow to last Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion is the product to buy.  I use the original version however they have several other colors of the primer available.

12.  Sephora by OPI Nail Polishes
Now I love applying different color nail polishes whenever I get a chance, especially on my toes.  I recently read somewhere that having a polished look (manis/pedis) is fundamental to any look and it is something that should not be overlooked.  Even filing and keeping your nails trim should not only be part of your healthy beauty routine but it also helps your overall look.  Sephora by OPI nail polishes are amazing and come in a variety of shades.  At first I was reluctant to buy these nail polishes however they have truly impressed me.  I recently splurged on Sephora by OPI “Tinsel Town Collectors Set” which includes a variety of miniature nail polishes, so excited to try it out!

13. (I know I said 12 but I couldn’t help it) Revlon Lip Butters.
Another product, which I just had to include, is a drugstore lip favorite of mine, Revlon Lip butters.  I have these lip butters in possibly 9 of their shades and they are absolutely amazing.  These lip products nourish your lips like a lip balm but also give you pigmentation just like a lipstick.  I do not enjoy wearing lipstick all the time and this is such a great alternative and it really leaves your lips smooth and soft.

Misc.
I had to add some miscellaneous items that have impressed and made 2012 memorable!

My wedding! I got married at the end August to the most amazing man ever and I am ever grateful for him.

My ipad is probably the most used in 2012 as well.  I decided to download books and read them and help my student who has learning disabilities with awesome apps that that Ipad has to offer.  I am tempted to buy the ipad mini, maybe in 2013!

I have also been loving word searches! I bought these very chic looking word search books and anytime I feel like a have a few minutes to spare I pull out my word search book.  This is definitely one of my stress relievers.

Product Rave: Clinique Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Remover

Today's Product rave is on Clinique's Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector.  This product comes in a cylinder container with a small pump to dispense the product.  The product comes in two sizes 1oz and 1.7oz and the price is reflective depending on which size you choose.  This serum claims to clinically reduce dark spots, age spots and acne damage.  It is also recommended for all skin types even those with sensitive skin.  The serum is very lightweight and applies smoothly onto the skin.

At first I was very reluctant to purchase this product for two reasons; number one it claims to reduce visible spots which have been on my skin for years, and number two: the price.  For a whopping  $65 I gave in and bought the product in the smaller size (1oz, 30ml).
I had heard so many things about it and so many advertisements that I just saw it as a sign to purchase it.  I have tried other Clinique skincare products as well as makeup products and they have impressed me, needless to say I am not new to the Clinique brand (clinique foundation review coming soon)

Review:

I have been using this product for about three months now and I can truly say it is a miracle worker.  I was very skeptical at first and didn't even think it would work however I am a firm believer in the product and all that it stand for.  The product has not caused any irritability on my skin and is fragrance free.  This product is not a product which you will see results right away, patience is key and you must give it some time in order to see the results.  Overall my skin feels smoother and softer while applying the product. Also, when applying makeup I found that the makeup glided nicely onto my skin.

I have read several reviews on this product and the results vary from each individual and it is definitely something you have to think about before purchasing.

Overall, I was impressed by the product and the results that I have gotten.  On another note do not forget to always apply sunscreen or a moisturizer with sunscreen to prevent new spots from occurring.

Have you tried this or any products which are similar? Let me know!

Essentials Abroad

A little update: I recently got married and I am now living in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.   Yes, that’s in Africa! It is really hot here and I thought I would do a post on my most essentials items that I always grab, so here goes.

1. Deodorant
Yes, obviously this would be at my number one spot as I think it is really essential and in this hot weather you always want to smell fresh.
My recommendation: Degree Clinical Strength

2. Bar Soap
I have now gotten accustom to using bar soap on my body oppose to a body wash it’s just easier to use and it lathers well.  I even sometimes use it as a replacement for shampoo.  My recommendation: Lush soaps and shampoo bars, and L’Occtaine soap (amazing but pricey).

3. Waterproof eyeliner
This is an essential regardless of the climate of where you are living; however because of the humidity anything and everything must be waterproof.

4. Hand Sanitizer
There are so many germs that accumulate and everywhere you go you have to be precautious.  I would recommend hand sanitizer regardless of where you live especially when you work with kids.  Obviously, hand sanitizer is not a replacement for washing your hands however when there is lack of water or if you’re in need to wash your hands it’s a good alternative.  My recommendation: Any Bath and Body Works Hand Sanitizer, plus you can even get really cute holders for them, Purell and Dettol sanitizer.

5. La Fresh Wipes
I recently came across these wipes when I went to a trade show and since then I have been trying to find them everywhere! I was browsing around Hautelook.com one day and saw them on sale and decided to buy a few packs.  They come in a variety of uses for example they have anti-bacterial wipes, deodorant wipes, nail polish wipes, makeup remover wipes, etc.  They are really small and are easy to transport and very convenient to slip into your bag when your heading out.  I cannot tell you how many times they have saved me in different situations.  These are something you must try!

6.  LongChamp Bag
When I first bought this amazing, incredible French tote bag I thought I was just going by the trend and wasting my money.  However, I realized how essential this bag is and how often I use it that it was well worth the money.  The bags come in a variety of colors and sizes and fold into a small square when you are storing them away.  They are durable and you can wash them with water or throw them in the washing machine.  I have the medium and large size bag and by far it has been a must have especially convenient when going to the beach because it holds an ample amount of stuff.

7.  Bug Spray
I have to admit I have not put on bug spray for quite sometime but every time I get an itching mosquito bite I curse myself for not putting some on.  Because I live in a highly infested area of mosquitoes and malaria is prevalent I do take malaria tablets as a precaution, but the spray does help to fend off those pesty bugs.

8.  Evian Mist Spray
If you have not heard of this multi-purpose spray I suggest you look it up because it should be a beauty must have.  Evian Mist Spray is basically a water mist which can be used to set makeup, sprayed on yourself on a hot day or sprayed on a cotton swab to fix those makeup mishaps.  It can be an alternative for those makeup-setting sprays that are in the market.  Try it out!

9.  Moisturizer
Whether you are applying it on your face or body moisturizer is key! They say your skin becomes drier in the colder months but because I live I a relatively humid country all year around, moisturizer has still been a key necessity for me to apply.  I currently use Bath and Body works Japanese Cherry Blossom Body Lotion and it smells and applies smoothly on my skin.  I will however probably buy aveeno or another moisturizer for my body because I don’t think Bath and Body works lotions are the best lotions for me to apply on my skin.

Foundation Series # 7: Bobbi Brown Oil-Free Even Finish Compact Foundation

I have decided to return my Foundation Series posts by blogging about yet another foundation I have tried and tested.  I hope you find the “Foundation Series” helpful and when going to the beauty counter you have some knowledge as to how particular foundations work.

Today’s post will be on Bobbi Brown Oil-Free Even Finish Compact Foundation.  The foundation is good for normal to oily skin types.  My shade in Bobbi Brown is Natural 4 and I did get matched by the makeup artist at the Bobbi Brown counter.  This foundation comes in a round black compact accompanied with a sponge which is good for on the go application.  I really like Bobbi Brown's sleek black packaging.
The foundation retails for $42 USD and I believe $50 CAD.

So how to use this foundation?
This foundation can be applied with the sponge that it comes with however I suggest that you apply any foundation with a brush of your choice for a better look. I usually just apply the foundation to the blemish areas of my face and then I apply Bobbi Brown’s Face powder all over my face.  With any creamy or liquid foundation it is always good to apply a translucent or any face powder on top to set the foundation.

Results?
The foundation is really smooth and applies well on the face.  The texture of the foundation is creamy which helps the foundation blend easily and look natural on the skin.  It does have full coverage when applied and you can even use it just for those certain areas that need coverage.  Because the foundation is full coverage a little goes a long way and you do not need a lot to achieve the results you are looking for.  When applied the foundation does not look or feel cakey and definitely controls the shine for those with oily skin.
Cons?
The sponge is probably the only downfall in this foundation because when used several times you do want to throw it away because of all the bacteria that has been on the sponge. The price can also be a con but Bobbi Brown is famous for her amazing foundation line and it is definitely worth going to the counter and asking them to apply it onto your face so that you can see the results for yourself.

Tips:
The good thing about Bobbi Brown foundation line is that whichever color you are in one foundation you can easily find a powder in the same shade, which is very convenient and saves time.  I do want to mention that this product is targeted towards oily to combination skin types so please keep this in mind, Bobbi Brown does carry a wide range of foundations for different skin types.  As always before makeup application always remember to apply a good primer or moisturizer before putting on the foundation!

Hope this helps and happy foundation searching =)

Travel Series Part Two: Travelling with Makeup

I know this is delayed but this is how I took my makeup when I travelled and how it is presently kept.  The makeup bag is from glitzyglam.com which carries an array of amazing makeup bags.

When travelling with makeup it is essential to make sure that nothing shifts around and that everything is in its place. This particular bag has a big deep case which holds all my powders, concealers, blushes, etc and it has pockets all around the inside.  On the top of the makeup bag there are two medium size pockets as well as three single pockets which can fit your mascaras, lipsticks or eyeliners.  The bag is made up of cloth material and it has a black and white damask pattern around the exterior and inside the bag is pink with tiny white strips.  As for my lipsticks I have stored them in this plastic zipper pouch and it has worked for me thus far. I also know that some people use those hanging makeup bags to also carry makeup which is another suggestion to carrying your makeup.

Travel Series Part One: Jewellery

So I am going to be moving to Africa in August and I wanted to do a travel series for all of you.

I actually am not a pro at packing anything however I do have some tips which I would like to share and I am always finding new inventive ways to store and pack the things that I need to talk particularly makeup and accessories.

So while I was deciding which jewellery I wanted to take with me I also had to think about how I would store all my earrings, necklaces, bracelets, etc.

I found this bead separator at Wal-Mart and decided this is the best way to store my jewellery and take it with me. (picture below). It's basically a clear plastic case which has square dividers and you can place your jewellery in each compartment.  All jewellery stays in its place and it is easy because it wont topple over in your suitcase.  You can also get these at any craft stores such as Michaels and possibly even the Dollar store. I find this the most practical for me because the container is clear and I can see which jewellery is in which compartment and also my earring and necklaces will not get tangled together which is always a problem I face.

Another idea I have is to buy a jewellery rolls which basically serves the same purpose as a brush roll (which stores all your brushes).  The jewellery roll also has many compartments in it with zippers and it rolls nicely so that all your jewellery is safe in one spot.

Also, when travelling with jewellery make sure that if the jewellery is expensive ex. Tiffanys or Pandora to ensure that you keep those items in a soft pouch or small box so that it does not get damaged.  Majority of these pouches and boxes are given when you purchase the jewellery.  If you have enough pouches you can also just store them in a small makeup bag and pack it in your suitcase.

Since majority of jewellery is costume jewellery and rather inexpensive I will not be storing everything in pouches.

This comes to an end of the Travel Series part one but make sure to stay tuned for more of this series :)
And if you have any tips which can help me please do comment below!
